Happy Slacker Mother’s Day!

I almost spit my crystal light on my computer screen laughing so hard when I read the USA Today article ‘Slacker Moms’ urge other mothers to chill. For the record I am a definite "Slacker Mom" not a perfect "Alpha" mom. Not that I wouldn’t want to be an Alpha mom - being a perfect mom would be nice but I do realize my limitations.

I have seen some extreme versions of Alpha Moms. A distance relative of mine has 4 kids - all seemingly perfect but I’m not quite sure what is brewing underneath the expensive, perfectly manicured clothes. These kids are in so many activities it is mind boggling. The parents have a lot of money so it is very easy for them to put their kids in numerous activities. But you know it’s really none of my business how they raise their kids, the only thing that matters is how I raise mine. Even though I’m a slacker I still have a kid that loves me, has wonderful social graces, does great in school .. the list could go on and on.

How do I know I’m a slacker mom? I am very familiar with the examples given in the article but in honor of Mothers Day on Sunday 5/13/07 I have a few more to add:

  • I have been known to dig through the laundry that has been sitting in the dryer for 2 days to find my kid clean clothes for school - 15 minutes before she has to leave
  • My daughter has been making her own breakfast since kindergarten
  • I attempted a PTA meeting once but couldn’t even stomach the entire meeting (the Alpha moms were in rare form that night!)
  • I’ve thrown out my daughters homework before she’s even done it.
  • I’ve lost numerous unsigned permission slips
  • It’s suppose to be 80 degrees here today in NJ so my daughter didn’t have any shorts so I cut off a pair of jeans 10 minutes before she had to leave for school this morning.
  • I bring Wordpress documentation to read at boring spring concerts
  • My daughter knows that Friday night is always "Friday Cocktail Hour" with my sisters

Are you an Alpha or Beta (i.e. slacker) Mom?
