Grand Canyon Glass Bridge - Yikes!!
My brother-in-law, Brian, sent me the National Geographic article Photo in the News: Grand Canyon Glass Bridge Rolled Out - this is incredible! They made a 70′ U-shaped walkway over the Grand Canyon. For $25 you can walk out and mimic flying 4000′ over the Colorado River. The most incredible thing about this is that this structure is only expected to last for about 15-20 years because the steel beams that are supporting it are embedded in the canyon wall and the Grand Canyon erodes pretty quickly so therefore this 30 million dollar walkway has an awfully short life-span.
I have always wanted to see the Grand Canyon. The closest I came is when I flew out to the West coast (Portland, Oregon) to travel back with my sister and her husband and their 2 small children. They were moving back home to New Jersey after adventuring out West. My favorite line is that my sister went out west in a mini-skirt and came back in a minivan. Any, back to my story about almost seeing the Grand Canyon … On our way to New Jersey from Oregon we had planned to take the southern route and see the Grand Canyon but we broke down in Salt Lake City and were stuck there for about 5 days. Due to jobs, etc. we had to get back to NJ so we had to take the most direct route home. So no Grand Canyon for me. I’ll make it there someday!
Will I go through this walkway (if it’s still there by the time I get to see the Grand Canyon)? HELL NO! No way am I walking out on a man-made structure that hangs 4000′ over the Colorado River AND it is only suppose to last 15-20 years. HELL - NO!!! Would you go out on it??
